DIY bookends.

11.7.12

This is one of the easiest DIYs I have ever encountered.  I read about it a long time ago and it just was sitting in the back of my mind for over a year.  We finally have a bookshelf in our living room and we needed bookends.  So we melted some old vinyl.

Materials needed:
-thin vinyl records that you don't mind never hearing again.
-boiling water
-a tub or sink
-a straight corner to bend a right angle into your record.

 1. Boil the water.  2. Pour the water into a sink or tub. 3. immediately put as much of the record in the water as you want to bend.  4. Once it feels wobbly (10 seconds or so), pull it out and hang it over the edge of a table at a right angle.

We used a wooden box to really flatten out the melted side.  This worked well to make the wobbly plastic strait.  The melty records dry within 30 seconds.

They hold up regular pocket sized novels however they wouldn't hold up my monstrous "Art of the Ages" book.

This is a fantastic quick activity...  The whole process took us about 15 minutes. We made 4 bookends.

I hope you are inspired!

Do you know any fun DIYs made from vinyl?
