Working from home.

11.1.13

Days working at home vary in productivity.  Some days, I work hard all day and accomplish many things on my to do list.  Others, I float aimlessly through it, checking my email every 10 minutes, hoping for a distraction.

It usually helps when I use a timer.  I usually use my stop watch on my phone.  The past few days I have been using an application called 30/30.  It is a task app, that lets you schedule amounts of time in for different activities.  It seems to be working quite well.  It is helping me realize how much time things actually take and what I am spending my time doing.  I haven't been scheduling in breaks in the app yet but that is one thing I will surely be doing these coming days. Working with a timer helps me stay on track.

Days that are less productive start by me pressing snooze on my alarm. And then pressing snooze on most all things throughout the day.  To get the most out of work days at home. I need a list of tasks to accomplish, realistic amounts of time for those tasks, and a reward/s for accomplishing them.

What tricks to do you use to motivate when you don't have a boss peering over your shoulder?

Cheers,

Anna

  1. Oh, I know what you mean! My non productive days include Netflix... :/ But my productive days include actually getting dressed and sitting at my desk instead of on the couch. Making coffee usually keeps me from getting up and wandering off, and making to do lists ALWAYS helps.

    1. Oh I'm glad I don't have Netflix in Germany. Yikes.

      Lists are great.

  2. I heard about this: http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/ on reddit. I haven't tried it because I'm not that busy nowadays but I think it would work!
